The Beautiful Risk of Living
On why a life worth living is rarely a life without risks.
There is something wonderfully irrational about being human.
We fall in love knowing relationships can become complicated. We make friends knowing life may eventually take us in different directions. We plant gardens knowing that some flowers will never bloom.
And still, we continue.
One might reasonably conclude that humanity has a remarkable talent for repeating risky behaviour.
But perhaps there is something wiser happening beneath it all.
We are willing to invest in things whose outcomes we cannot control because we recognize that their value is not limited to how they end.
A friendship that lasts five years is not necessarily a failure because it didn't last fifty. A career that changes direction is not automatically a mistake. A beautiful experience does not lose its meaning simply because it becomes a memory.
Not everything valuable is meant to last forever.
We often judge our decisions by their outcomes. If something works, we call it wise. If it fails, we wonder whether we should have tried at all.
But outcomes are imperfect judges.
A thoughtful decision can lead to disappointment. A careless one can occasionally succeed. Life is not always generous enough to reward good judgment immediately.
Perhaps our older selves will understand this better than we do.
At seventy or eighty, we may discover that the important question was never whether every choice turned out perfectly, but whether we lived according to what mattered to us.
Whether we loved sincerely. Whether we remained curious. Whether we made room for other people. Whether we enjoyed the life we had instead of constantly negotiating for a better one.
There is an old wisdom in understanding that everything changes. But change does not make affection, effort, or hope meaningless.
Quite the opposite.
The temporary nature of things is often what makes our attention to them so precious.
We do not need guarantees before we participate in life.
We only need to recognize that being alive offers something worth participating in.
Today's Practice — Appreciate Without Guarantees
Think of one thing in your life that you value but cannot completely control.
A relationship. A friendship. An ambition. An opportunity.
Instead of worrying about how it might end, consider what makes it worthwhile today.
Then do one small thing that honours its value.
Express appreciation. Give it your attention. Make an effort without demanding certainty in return.
Some of life's finest experiences are worth having even when we cannot know how they will unfold.
