The Forgotten Character
I was so busy worrying about how my story would unfold that I almost forgot the person living it.
There was a time when I worried I would never make it in life.
I worried about finding a good job. When I finally found one, I worried about losing it. When I earned more money, I worried about losing that too.
At some point, I became remarkably talented at worrying. Give me one reason to celebrate, and I could probably find three reasons to panic.
Perhaps you know the feeling.
Life can sometimes resemble a movie whose ending we desperately want to know. We rehearse the worst scenes, imagine every possible disaster, and try to prepare for things that may never happen.
Meanwhile, the movie is playing.
And we are missing it.
What if worrying about losing everything is already costing us something precious?
We spend so much energy protecting our future that we forget to care for the person who must live through it.
Ourselves.
A rather important character, considering we're supposed to be playing the leading role.
There is an old wisdom worth remembering: peace begins when we learn to distinguish what belongs to our choices from what belongs to life's uncertainties.
We cannot control every outcome, every opinion, or every unexpected turn.
But we can decide how we prepare, how we respond, and how we treat ourselves along the way.
Worry imagines a thousand problems. Wisdom asks which one we can actually do something about.
So make your plans. Save your money. Work towards your ambitions.
But don't forget to enjoy what you've already achieved. Call a friend. Celebrate a small victory. Rest without feeling guilty.
You deserve to experience the life you're working so hard to protect.
Because the greatest tragedy would not be an unexpected ending, but reaching it without having enjoyed the story.
Today's Practice — Take Back Control
Think of one thing worrying you today.
Ask yourself: Can I do something about this right now?
If yes, take one small action. Make the call, send the application, or write down your next step.
If not, write the worry down, set it aside for now, and give your attention to something meaningful in front of you.
You don't need to control the whole story. Just make today a chapter worth living.
Did this speak to you?
