Become Your Own Surprise
You never quite know who you might become when you refuse to stop learning.
I have always been curious about what I could become if I simply kept learning.
Over the years, I have taught myself languages, learned how to drive, taken online courses, earned certificates, and acquired skills I once knew absolutely nothing about.
Eight languages have now found their way into my life. Some I speak better than others, of course. I would love to claim that I am equally brilliant in all eight, but I suspect a few native speakers would strongly disagree.
Still, I find it fascinating how much we can teach ourselves when curiosity becomes a habit.
I learned to drive, for instance, without following the traditional path of having someone patiently explain every little thing. I simply wanted to learn. And I did.
Looking back, I realize that a remarkable amount of my personal development began with a rather simple thought:
*Surely, I can figure this out.*
A thought that, I must admit, has occasionally been followed by another:
*Well, this is considerably more complicated than I expected.*
But I kept going.
And somewhere along the way, those little efforts began opening doors I had never imagined.
Today, my work takes me across borders. I have travelled to places I once only knew through photographs, met people from different cultures, and experienced parts of the world that once seemed impossibly distant.
In my family, I have been the one fortunate enough to travel so widely. I do not take that privilege lightly.
Sometimes, I look back at the younger version of myself and wonder what he would think if he could see where life has taken us.
He would probably be impressed.
And then immediately ask what we are planning next.
But beneath the humour, there is something I have come to believe deeply.
**One of the greatest investments we can make is in the person we are becoming.**
And that investment does not always require money, extraordinary talent, or a perfect opportunity.
Sometimes, it begins with a book. A free lesson. A conversation with someone who knows more than we do. Or a question that keeps bothering us until we finally decide to find the answer.
We often imagine growth as something dramatic. A qualification, a promotion, a remarkable achievement, or an entirely new life.
But most of the changes that shape us begin quietly.
One new word. One useful skill. One small discovery.
And then another.
I am learning that taking care of ourselves is not only about resting, protecting our peace, or enjoying the present. It is also about giving our future selves something valuable to work with.
**Self-care is also self-development.**
Of course, this does not mean turning every peaceful afternoon into a professional training session. We are human beings, not machines waiting for the next software update.
Rest is important. So is doing absolutely nothing occasionally, preferably without feeling the need to explain it to anyone.
But I believe there is something beautiful about ending a day knowing that we have learned even one small thing we did not know that morning.
Perhaps there is something you have always wanted to learn. A language, an instrument, a professional skill, or simply how to do something you have always depended on others to do for you.
Why not begin?
You do not have to become an expert tomorrow. You do not even have to be particularly good at it today.
Give yourself a little time. Learn one thing. Practice it. Make mistakes. Laugh at yourself when necessary.
And when you succeed, however small the achievement, acknowledge it.
Be proud of that new word you can pronounce, that problem you can finally solve, or that little task you can now accomplish independently.
Those moments matter.
I still have so much to learn. There are places I want to discover, skills I want to master, and possibilities I have not yet begun to explore.
And that excites me.
Because if the things I taught myself yesterday helped bring me this far, I cannot help wondering where the things I learn tomorrow might take me.
So, as we continue growing, I hope we never lose the courage to be beginners.
Let us remain curious, ask questions, make mistakes, and celebrate the little victories that nobody else may notice.
**Learn something today that your future self will thank you for.**
And who knows?
One day, you may look at the person you have become and wonder how on earth you managed to get there.
Perhaps you will even surprise yourself.
**And wouldn't that be a wonderful person to meet?**
